From childhood I used to read biographies, and some I preferred to fiction. I believe that I was inspired to make myself better by reading Biographies. Drawing fiction is easy. Sometimes it can be difficult when it is a famous book. Drawing a biography can be more difficult and it would be even harder if the person is contemporary.

When I received the script and I tried to draw Mother Teresa and failed pathetically. Till I receive this book, I have not really explored Mother Teresa's character. Now I know her better and I regret that I didn't explore her before, not because of the difficulties in drawing her. Without this commission I could have missed this very special human being.

No matter how hard I tried here were times I felt that drawing her is not possible. I excused myself thinking that her face is familiar to everyone and also it has changed over the time. It was very difficult to capture the common likeness which everyone recognized. But I explored her life more and more, first out of curiosity and soon out of great respect.
Though she was internationally famous she was not a complex personality. She lived a very simple life, but her personality was very rich. More I read about her more I got attracted to her personality. I started to feel that more than everything else, it was her unconditional love which makes 'The Mother".
She says, "Even the rich are hungry for love, for being cared for, for being wanted, for having someone to call their own. "
If she loved only the poor her love is not so great. She loved everyone for everyone suffers. Not only the poor the rich too suffer. She says that if lonely Rich too are poor. "Loneliness and the feeling of being unwanted is the most terrible poverty." She loved both rich and poor.
Over the time her face changed, her responsibilities changed but she was the same little girl who loved the suffering and did her best to help. .
Mother's service was not admired and praised all the time. She faced great adversity. When I search the net I came across many articles written by negative people who couldn't really understand her. But it was interesting that some have blamed her for what she implemented for the good of others. One had written "Mother was very concerned that sisters of her mission, preserve their spirit of poverty". As a follower of Buddha's path of Dhamma, I can see that the way Mother Teresa had asked her sisters to live is much similar to what Buddha wanted his monks to follow. One begging bowl, 3 pieces of robe, not preserving food for next meal, a temporary shelter and traveling for the good of others.
Those negative articles were not convincing anything negative about Mother. It was clear who was bad. Nothing could subdue her service of love.
Her vision was clear and unchanged over the time because love is the base of her life and the base of the existence too.. In the beginning though I had tried to capture her features I realized that it was not the features people saw. It was her love they felt and without that it was not her. That difference I noticed even looking at her photographs.
That was the missing link in my drawing which possibly made our editor Reena say "She doesn't look like Mother Teresa at all", When I start to feel Mother Teresa more and more, drawing her became easier than before, but never became easy. My artistic skill also is not strong enough to capture what I felt of Mother. I redrew some frames even after inking. I drew the face of her in the last frame quite a few times, to get what we have last.. still lot of room to make it better. How can one portray, such a great human being who is always ahead of you.
I found that I grew in skill as an artist also by trying to portray her to the best I could. But most important aspect is the growth of Mother Teresa in me no matter how minute that could be because it is growth of love.

I am very grateful to everyone who was with me in this journey to know about Mother Teresa, this very special human being.

The Writer of Mother Teresa says...

By Shalini Srinivasan

This was the first time I was working on a comic script, and I was insanely nervous. That I was working on someone as wonderful as Mother Teresa didn't help. That I was working with an artist as good as you (for I googled you and saw some of your stuff as soon as I heard you were to illustrate it), only made it more intimidating.

As I delved deeper into Mother's life, I found that there was too much to write! There were so many things I wanted to say, so many stories to tell, so many people to portray, so many quotes, and so many songs to put in. I agonised over every bit that didn't make it. I can't imagine what I'd have done without Reena at this stage (also at every other stage, but here most of all): probably collapsed into a pool of panic.

When I saw the art though, I was suddenly very happy. I occurred to me that I was fortunate, for the nicest thing about a comic is that it depended not entirely on me, but also on you: and your art took the story up where I left it off, and made it into this lovely, utterly touching thing. Where there were no references, like in Mother's vision, you made the words into this haunting, powerful image. The nuns in Calcutta were all struck by that one page, recognising Mother's words in it immediately.

I don't think I emailed you to say so then, but the cover is perfect. When I think of Mother Teresa, all the research, all the writing, and all the drawing seems to come together in that one image.

Working with you, on Mother Teresa, was indescribably wonderful, and scary, and fun, and I am very very grateful to have had the opportunity.

Love revives Indian comics

Mother Teresa brought to life in Amar Chitra Katha after four years

Jayanthi Madhukar

Posted On Friday, August 20, 2010 at 07:56:59 PM

if you were a child from the ‘70s or the ‘80s, chances are that most of the history, mythology, fables and folktales that you knew then came from Amar Chitra Katha. They were the Indian counterparts of western comics. However, in recent years Amar Chitra Katha had lost its sheen and patronage. These comics never left the scene but new titles slowly became less frequent. Finally, after a break of four years, ACK Media is launching a new title called Mother Teresa: Little Acts Of Love, on August 26, the 100th birth anniversary of the Mother.

“Mother Teresa was chosen as our come-back title because of the universality of her personality,” said Savita Pai, VP, ACK Media (no relation to Uncle Anant Pai, the man behind Amar Chitra Katha).

The new Amar Chitra Katha is a 40-page story on Mother Teresa, documenting her journey as a 12-year-old from the distant shores of Albania to India, where she cherished the poorest of the poor with unconditional love. The story is scripted by Shalini Srinivasan who worked closely with the Missionaries of Charity to bring out the various facets of Mother Teresa’s personality including her kindness and love for the people of India. During the course of Shalini’s intensive research, she met with Sister Gertrude, one of Mother’s students at the Loreto order, much before Mother Teresa started Missionaries of Charity.

The illustrations are by Atula Sriwardane from Sri Lanka who speaks of the experience, “In the beginning I had tried to capture her features, but then I realised that it was not the features people saw. It was her love that they felt and without that it was not her.

“When I started to feel Mother Teresa more, drawing her became easier than before, but it never became very easy. How can one portray such a great human being who is always ahead of you?” As the editor, Reena Puri says, “After reading this book, we hope that children will ask what they can do to help others. Even one little act of love is enough.” This is probably the best gift one can give in the name of Mother Teresa, who felt that the greatest disease in the world was of being unloved and unwanted.

Pay Only for the Work You Really Need

Full time employees cost 1.5 times their salary in overhead.
Flexible freelance staffing lets you control spending so you can maximize your resources.

Discover More Flexibility: Now is the time to change your recruitment strategy: Independent workers make up 30% of the nation's workforce - and almost half of all businesses are now home-based.

Leverage the power of highly skilled specialists who have the self-starter motivation to succeed: Use freelance experts instead of adding staff to mobilize on efficiency and talent without the full-time burden or expense.

Protect Your Stability: Safeguard substantial savings throughout your organization by hiring freelance:

mentioned by Roger Wilbanks. I found many interesting and very usefull points in the letters. I thought they should be read by anyone who is interested in Comics creation.

I post one letter by Mark for an example...
Here's a question for you: Why are certain comic books more popular than others?

The measure of a book's popularity is sales, of course, and if you look at the publisher's statements that we print on our letters pages once a year, you have a fair idea of what most books sell in comparison to one another. Let me list some of the factors that I can determine affect popularity, and let's see where that gets us.

1. Recognition factor. If a character has name recognition value to the general public, say, from being on television like Spider-Man and the Hulk, you'd think those characters would sell better. For the most part, that's true. But I can think of a character published by one of our competitors who has had several movies and a TV show about him, and that still doesn't help sales. Recognition value can't account for everything.

2. Popular creative teams. This would only be a boon in the fan market, though-- in the general public-- I doubt there's any name recognition of most comics creators (except maybe for Stan Lee).

3. Good, clear stories about well-defined characters. I sure hope this is a factor, because it's the editor's main job to get the creative teams to do just that. If you can put any old thing between two covers and it sells the same as anything else, we editors are all out of jobs! On the other hand, I know of a few very well-written, well-plotted, well-drawn series that didn't sell, and a few badly-written, badly-plotted, badly-drawn series that did! I guess there'll always be flukes.

4. Good covers. I'm certain that a real grabber of a cover will compel an occasional buyer to plunk down his quarters just to see what the story's all about. But there have been great covers on certain low-sellers, so this isn't a sure-fire rule.

5. High concepts. Certain Big Ideas tend to generate extra sales, namely, Death, Marriage, and Costume Changes. Crossovers are also popular concepts. (Is it any wonder that a book like SECRET WARS, featuring the biggest cross-over of all time, should sell four or five times better than the average Marvel book?)

That's all the ones that occur to me off the top of my head. It still doesn't explain a few things to me, such as the huge popularity of the mutant books. I mean, how much difference is there between a super hero who is born with his/her powers and one who acquires them later in life, hmm? Sure, all of the mutant books are well-written, but then again, so are lots of other books that don't sell nearly as well. So how about it, readers? How about you cluing in this greying editor on what factors you think make a comic book better-selling than another. I'll print your best guesses in this space.

--Mark Gruenwald

___________________________________
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Mark Gruenwald

Born

June 18, 1953(1953-06-18)
Oshkosh, Wisconsin

Died

August 12, 1996 (aged 43)

Nationality

American

Area(s)

Writer, Penciller, Editor

Notable works

Captain America
Squadron Supreme

Awards

Comics Buyer's Guide Fan Award, 1987, 1996

Mark E. In 1978 he was hired by Marvel Comics, where he remained for the rest of his career.
Death and legacy
In 1996, Gruenwald succumbed to a heart attack, the result of an unsuspected congenital heart defect. Gruenwald was a well-known practical joker, and due to his young age, many of his friends and co-workers initially believed the reports of his death to be just another joke. He suggested a Chinese Comic book artist HuangJiaWei's Page on Facebook. His art is amazing.. So many varieties of styles and minute detals and very simple but much alive art too.
While searching for more Manhua artists, I came across with another artist... Benjamin. He may be the most popular artist.. I love his color illustrations a lot. It is so amazing the way he create beautiful art with his quick brush technique in very raw and bright colors. He just play with colors.
<img style="margin: 0px auto 10px; Mainly after I requested him to add me as a friend in Facebook and which he did..

Mignola's style is so different from what I used to do. I always felt and was told that I don't use enough Black. To correct that Mignola may be the best inspiration. His compositions are perfect... Just by looking at them without trying to do would not help me much, I felt. ...Actually, I removed much from the background after inking, realizing the gap.
After some more of them I want to try Hellboy on my own. He is unique as much as the style....

I still don't have the character in my mind...
But I'll try from time to time.. It is a great character and an innovative style to practice.
I invited Mike Mignola to have a look at this in my Comicartfans Gallery.
He did and commented
"Nice handling of the background--especially on the left side. A lot of people try but can't pull off that effect of things disappearing into the black. Nice."
I was inspired a lot.... and realized that Mignola's comment about the effect of things disappearing into the black have struck a missing, very important note in my work.
I did lot of pastel paintings using my finger to smudge. So I used to smudge the edges away when I felt an outline disturbs... I did not notice earlier the use of it in doing comics.
I am doing a comic book cover but I was struggling with lot of clutter I didn't want in it...
Then I started applying the effect and things started to fall into places and merge well.. I think I have not consciously tried it in comics before, perhaps because we have taken it for granted that comics are made with outlines. Artists like Mignola and Frazetta had merged the comics and traditional classical painting very successfully dissolving the boundaries.
I am very grateful to Mike Mignola for providing the missing link.

It hit the first place in 'Most views of the day' in Comicartfans.
http://www.comicartfans.com/GalleryPiece.asp?Piece=471157&GSub=30055
_____________________________________________________________
Here is a thumbnai...
made for the header of Border Kingdom.
I have used the smudging for this which I mentioned above.

Frazetta on Visualizing and making thumbnails.

Frazetta says......
"Most of the time when I start a painting," Frank reveals, "I don't have a solid image in my head, just a certain feeling about what I'm going to do. Sometimes I see the images very clearly, but they're usually real basic. I don't see detail, just a certain atmosphere-that it's warm or cold, that it's frightening or eerie. Perhaps there's a thrust to it or a circular action. As my mind works on this, my hand will draw almost unconsciously, building shapes and masses, no detail at all. What emerges sometimes surprises me as much as my audience."

pg 132
Testament: The Life and Art of Frank Frazetta
Arnie Fenner, Cathy Fenner
_______________________________________

I also used to work in detail even at Thumbnail stage and found I lose the sense of the scene and start struggling to find it using the intelect... that is so depressing. The way Frazetta does is the best for it helps to feel the whole scene in its totality, which helps maintaining the right proportions and uniformity in the scene. And also it allows one to compose colors, shapes, lines... everything which makes art......
and add only the most essential detail later...

====================================================================

Dave Stevens writes in his blog
Frank’s approach to art is so intuitive and natural that it takes very little for him to get a mental grasp of the essence of a scene. He “sees” the result with an act of intuition and gets it drawn or painted as soon as possible. He doesn’t like to over-intellectualize the process. There are exceptions to this rule, however.

One of those exceptions is the famous “death scene” from the 1977 KUBLA KHAN portfolio. Most of the plates were drawn in 1975, with the cover image being added in 1977. Frank was giving a great deal of thought to the composition of the scene. He wanted to maximize the emotional impact. He did a series of quick sketches to try and get a clear visual grasp of what he was searching for. I have depicted all these studies. It is easy to see the progression of Frank's thought. He starts with ideas that are overtly histrionic and obvious. The mind starts with the obvious visual clichés. He wants something better. Less is more. He wants to reduce any dramatic gesturing and replace it with a scene that smolders with emotion.

Read more and watch some prelims and the final art of Kublai Khan

_____________________________________________________________

Frazetta - Painting with Fire

For the last half century, Frank Frazetta has dominated the world of Fantasy Art with his images of fierce warriors, helpless princesses, and fantastical creatures set in the most lavish landscapes.

Journey to a place where up until now, only the privileged have been, and witness the man behind the legend.
Plot first or “Marvel style”: This method is typically used by Marvel Comics (based on Stan Lee’s working relationships with artists such as Jack Kirby), writer/artist teams who have a strong collaborative rapport.
The plot and page breakdown can be generated by the writer alone, or by the writer and artist together. Then the artist pencils the story, after which the writer scripts the in-panel text — everything but the panel descriptions — to fit the art.
(from http://www.bigredhair.com/work/comics.html)

John Buscema and Roy Thomas are famous for working in this style harmoniously and very successfully on Conan the Barbarian and many others.
When John Buscema was asked
"Do you think the Marvel Style of Synopsis, Art, and Dialogue is better than working straight from a Script.?"
He said..
"Definitely. That's the best way to work. That's the ONLY way to work. A lot of young writers at Marvel will give me a detailed, outlined script. I work with them ONCE-I will not work with them again. Because I want something to work with. I don't want to be straight jacketed into a corner, and told how many panels I have to work with, and what they are doing in each panel. I love the freedom that Marvel gives us with the synopsis.
That's the best way."

I think that...
It depends on both the writer and the artist and their mutual trust in the ability and the interest in working in this style..
I think there is more creative opportunity in this style than working from a script..
And I like the idea that writer writes dialogues and captions which is suitable for the actions and expressions I draw.
I usually show the thumbnails to the writer so that he can add his views. I would show pencils with text too, if he had provided me with dialogues and captions. I think if the artist and writer works using the best aspects of this style it can enhance the efect and the quality of the comic book to a much higher level than drawing from a script.

A Facebook note on the same topic with a lot of comments by Writers and Artists.

Original art lovers and collectors,. I too think that Original art is not sold now for art alone. It has become a field where some buy art as investment. It helps artists in a way but it is a shame and as an insult for an artist. I think an artist would love most to see someone enjoys his art. I personally like if a collector do not resell. I like if someone else buy it for a higher price because he likes it.
I wouldn't like to hear someone tell me that " I paid this much and won your art in an auction and hope to sell it soon for a much higher price... See, you are becoming more popular."
It is sad that someone spend money on art only to earn more money...
But that's the trend.

<link rel='alternate' type='text/html' href='http://atulasiriwardane.blogspot.com/2009/01/original-art-lovers-and-collectors-are.html' title='Original art lovers and collectors,. I had only seen one painting (Spider man) of him in print.
Frank Frazetta's Drawing style
That made me craving for more.. and I got these books and DVD.
I always wondered that how does he draw.. I usually learn by watching some other artist drawing than by any other way.
I watched in the DVD the way Frazetta was drawing a Tiger on a Mount of a print...
and I realized a lot.. intellectually and intuitively.

He draws with Awareness not with concentration.
I think his success depends on the type of awareness he maintains while drawing is 99% of his excellence and the rest is his knowledge and practice.
I am sure that it is what Buddha calls Sampajano Sathi and what Bruce Lee calls 'No-mindedness'. Unlike concentration, it allows you to do many different things at one time like computers now-a-days.

One of the most important is that he doesn't carelessly sketch, leaving mistakes behind to correct later as I and many other artists do....
Instead he draws directly building up the figure very carefully from the beginning. He tends not to lift the pencil much.. moving the pencil on the surface continuously pressing it harder when necessary. This works very well in Life drawing. Frazetta draws as if he has a model. His vision must be very clear most of the times.
He erases a very little. When he erases he does that too with the same care as he draws.
